Kine A week said “This new powerful ‘crooks slip out’ try peopled that have a colorful range off vital and you may arresting characters, that, skilfully manipulated from the publisher and you may manager, allow the flick to tread water effectively. It is merely into the finish it begins to break down, although smack-right up finale rescues it on ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you will wisely dialogued, it has no higher challenge from inside the life down their very unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said “The film movements from the an easy speed, the new dialogue is actually advanced and you may characterisations essentially effective. Manhood Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes direct the new throw professionally, while the investigator are played with big aplomb because of the that individual character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody from the The new Yorker indexed “Which terse and taut film noir was considering the new romantic and you may elite group conflicts of your own identity profile, brand new violent genius (starred of the Cock Powell) behind a posh illegal local casino. The film’s publisher and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess online game, to possess mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) did in the gambling establishment and you may dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic software, the brand new cast’s suavely managed body language off love and possibility, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and fashionably assertive images (plus his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet intricate spectacle an invisible vintage of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Pic has actually activity and you can suspense, and you may certain small suits off humor to provide style. Ace activities by Cock Powell, due to the fact a playing family overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, just like the an authorities inspector, together with up the get . While the area comes after a common trend, new characterizations try fresh in addition to shows adequate so you can overbalance. Dialogue are terse and you will topical, avoiding the psychological, phoney reach. Uncommon camera basics appear occasionally to heighten interest and you may temporarily stop the attention. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling because director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand spanking new blogger and you may representative manufacturer, also aids in rendering it a delicate manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its mainly a question of watching Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably whenever you are a giant shed out of stars and performers give your vintage assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little woman just who brings about the fresh finest in your and you may Ellen Received is the smooth and you will slinky vixen exactly who becomes him to the jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do another type of in a position tour since a weary cops inspector just who fundamentally closes the actual situation. A great deal of drinking and you will puffing is accomplished from the all of the alarmed.” [ several ]
